Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program
The Barry M. Goldwater Foundation awards scholarships to outstanding undergraduates who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. The scholarships go to students who will be college juniors or seniors in the coming academic year. Four-year institutions are eligible to nominate up to four students who are in the sophomore or junior class during the current academic year. Two-year institutions may nominate up to two students who are sophomores during the current academic year. To be considered, a student must be nominated by his or her college or university using the official nomination materials available to each institution on the Foundation’s website. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually.
CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Award Program
CRA’s Outstanding Undergraduate Award program recognizes undergraduate students in the US or Canada who show outstanding research potential in an area of computing research. In addition to evidence of significant research contributions, the committee also considers the student’s academic record and service to the community. The $1,000 cash prize can be awarded to one male and one female student from each school; other outstanding candidates receive honorable mentions. The two first prize winners from each school receive financial assistance toward their travel to the conference where the award is presented.

Develop Intelligence
The goal of the $1000 scholarship is to get students thinking about ways they can use computer technology to solve future problems. As a technical training company, we are passionately involved workforce development projects.
Harlem Bling Annual Scholarship Program
Harlem Bling, a hip-hop jewelry brand, offers an annual scholarship to help students continue their education. We understand that some students need financial support to attend college or university, and we want to help those in need. The Harlem Bling Annual Scholarship doesn’t expire and is recurring each new school semester.
The Harlem Bling Annual Scholarship offers 2 recipients $600 each to go towards tuition fees. Applicants must be incoming, undergraduate, or graduate students at a United States college or university.
Scholarships for Underrepresented STEM Majors
If you’re a minority student interested in finding free money to help you earn a degree in science, technology, engineering, or math, check out this list of organizations that offer scholarships for Black students in STEM.
- The American Meteorological Society: The American Meteorological Society provides scholarships to minority students who have traditionally been underrepresented in the sciences. This includes Black or African American students, as well as Native American and Hispanic students. The scholarship provides $6,000 in total funding distributed over a two-year period during freshman and sophomore years. Applications are due each February.
- The Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program: The Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarship Program is available to those earning a master’s or doctoral degree in oceanography, marine biology, and maritime archaeology. While open to everyone, members of minority groups are especially encouraged to apply. The application period opens each October.
- The Society of Physics Students Scholarship Program: The Society of Physics Students offers an Underrepresented Student Scholarship to undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior year of college who are majoring in physics or related science. Applicants must be undergraduate members of the SPS national organization and be from a group that is underrepresented in science and engineering. Applications are due each March.
Internal Scholarship Opportunities
The following list outlines scholarship opportunities and academic awards for which current students of the Baskin School of Engineering are eligible.
Amy Beth Snader Memorial Scholarship
The Amy Beth Snader Memorial Scholarship was established in 1992 in honor of its namesake, an alumna of UC Santa Cruz in Computer and Information Sciences. Incoming first-year students who are interested in pursuing a degree in the Baskin School of Engineering — both women and men, with academic merit and financial need — are welcome to apply. This is a four-year scholarship that will be issued to deserving students in the Engineering fields who exhibit academic excellence and evidence of creativity and originality. If you will be attending UCSC as a first-year frosh you may apply for this scholarship.
Baskin Endowed Scholarship
The Baskin Endowed Scholarship awards qualified students based on academic merit and financial need.
Robert H. Bisno Endowed Scholarship
The expendable distribution of the Robert H. Bisno Endowed Scholarship shall be used to provide monetary assistance to undergraduate students in the Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz to help relieve the cost of attendance. The recipient must be a proposed or declared engineering major and show intent to complete the degree. Preference will be given to students showing financial need. Please apply if you meet the required criteria mentioned above. Deadline to apply for Fall 2022 is July 1, 2022.
Huffman Prize
The Huffman Prize honors the memory and the legacy of its namesake – David A. Huffman (1925-1999), Computer Science Professor Emeritus. Huffman was a distinguished member of the UC Santa Cruz faculty and one of the founders of the first department in what is now the Jack Baskin School of Engineering. The Prize is awarded annually to a Baskin School of Engineering graduating senior whose academic career at UCSC exhibits extraordinary creativity, depth of inquiry, and overall excellence. Seniors apply by submitting a personal statement, at least one letter of reference from faculty, and documentation of noteworthy projects or unusual accomplishments. Recipients are selected by a faculty committee. Deadline for submitting applications is May 1, 2023.
David S. Lee Scholarship
The David S. Lee Scholarship recognizes UCSC Baskin School of Engineering undergraduate students for their achievements and the diverse experiences that they bring into the engineering community. David S. Lee served as a member of the UC Board of Regents from 1994 to 2006. Two of his three children are alumni of UCSC. Students with academic merit and financial need apply online for this competitive award. Deadline for submitting applications is May 1, 2023.
Marilyn C. and Raymond E. Davis Memorial Scholarship
The Marilyn C. and Raymond E. Davis Memorial Scholarship is a funding opportunity ranging from $500 to $1,500 for eligible underrepresented re-entry students in STEM. This includes: undergraduates 25 or older, graduate students 29 and older, students with dependents, veteran students.
The scholarship provides funding for expenses related to a student’s education. Examples include (but are not limited to) costs associated with thesis preparation, field research, publication of an article, presenting a paper at a conference, applying to graduate programs, traveling to visit graduate programs, or interviewing for jobs. Awards may be used for direct costs of these activities or for other indirect associated expenses such as child care and equipment.

Next Generation Scholars in Applied Mathematics
The Next Gen. SAM project provides outstanding seniors and graduate students from low-income backgrounds critical resources to earn a Masters degree in Scientific Computing and Applied Mathematics. This includes financial support in the form of scholarships, personalized academic mentoring and counseling, peer support, and professional development advice.
Patrick Mantey Undergraduate Leadership Award
The Patrick Mantey Undergraduate Leadership Award recognizes a Baskin School of Engineering undergraduate student who demonstrates outstanding leadership abilities and exhibits academic merit. Students, whose contributions represent the very best attributes and accomplishments in the community, are nominated by faculty (students do not apply). This award was established to honor Professor Patrick E. Mantey, founding Dean of the Jack Baskin School of Engineering, in recognition of his leadership and service in helping establish engineering at UC Santa Cruz. Baskin Engineering faculty nominate students for this award. The deadline for faculty to make their nominations is May 1, 2023.
Robert H. Triebig Memorial Scholarship
The Robert H. Triebig Memorial Scholarship recognizes undergraduate students studying electrical engineering. The scholarship was established in 1997 by Elsie (Vermont) Triebig in honor of her late husband, Robert H. Triebig, who had worked for 47 years as an electrical engineer. Through this scholarship, the Triebig family hopes to help many other individuals reach their dream of becoming an electrical engineer. Proposed and declared Electrical Engineering students may apply. Deadline for submitting applications is May 2, 2022.
Travel Scholarships
The School of Engineering Undergraduate Advising Office awards a quarterly travel scholarship that reimburse students for travel related expenses used in attending Engineering Specific events. The scholarships are awarded based on academic merit. For more information or assistance, contact Jim Whitehead.
Deans’ and Chancellor’s Undergraduate Awards
The Deans’, Chancellor’s, and Steck Awards recognize exceptional achievement in research projects or other creative activities. Application forms are available in early spring from offices of the Chancellor, Divisions, Departments, and Colleges. Winners are honored at the Undergraduate Academic Awards ceremony in June that culminates the UCSC annual Student Achievement Week.
Deans’ Undergraduate Award
In late spring, fifty undergraduate students, ten from each of the five academic divisions, receive the Dean’s Award of $100 for outstanding achievement in their division. Recipients are considered for the Chancellor’s Award.
Chancellor’s Undergraduate Award
From the Deans’ Award recipient list, the Chancellor’s Award recognizes the top three students from each division. These students are given an additional $500 award. Recipients are considered for the Steck Award.
Steck Award
The Steck Award recognizes what they feel is the most outstanding research project chosen from the fifteen Chancellor Awardees. The student recipient receives an additional $1,000. In addition, his or her senior thesis/research project is bound and copies are given to the student, the research supervisor, UC Santa Cruz Library, and the Steck family, whose generous contributions have made this award possible.
