Engineering undergrad is fastest to solve national codebreaker challenge
For the second year in a row, UC Santa Cruz undergraduate computer engineering student Astra Tsai was the fastest student to solve the National Security Administration’s codebreaker challenge—a competition she discovered through Slug security, a Baskin Engineering student organization.
Reimagined undergrad class teaches students the entire DNA sequencing process using cutting-edge devices
For almost every student, it’s their first time carrying out the DNA sequencing process in action, building valuable skills for their careers. Their results are published online, contributing to real-world data that can help scientists better understand biodiversity in the local environment.

Meet the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)
ACM at UC Santa Cruz is the largest computing club on campus, with more than 1,000 members. The organization fosters a supportive and inclusive community for students of all backgrounds and skill levels. ACM offers five branches that provide weekly technical workshops, introduce students to AI research, host social meetings for networking and new experiences, bring projects from prototypes to full-scale production, and organize a yearly hackathon.
