Proposed Major Standing

First Year Students

First-time freshmen enter the Baskin School of Engineering as “proposed majors” before taking the steps to declare an Engineering major.

In addition to being a proposed major, students will meet the major qualification requirements for their intended major prior to declaring their major.

Students are required to declare a major by the major declaration deadline in their 6th quarter.

Please note that not all of the courses from the proposed major policy list (at the bottom of this page) are required for every Baskin Engineering major. Refer to your intended curriculum charts for more information.

If you are interested in having your proposed non-Baskin Engineering major changed to a Baskin Engineering major, please submit your request on our Change of Proposed Major form.

What is a Proposed Major?

Being in proposed engineering major status allows students to access advising, receive pertinent communication, and gain access to enrolling in some required major courses.

In order to be eligible to declare a Baskin Engineering major, students need to be listed as a proposed major in one of the following:

  • Biomolecular Engineering and Bioinformatics
  • Computer Engineering
  • Computer Science: Computer Game Design
  • Computer Science (B.A. or B.S.)*
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Robotics
  • Technology and Information Management**

Students pursuing Applied Mathematics, Biotechnology, or Network and Digital Technology are NOT required to be proposed in this major in order to declare as such.

* Admission to the Computer Science majors (B.A. and B.S.) is selective. The Computer Science majors at UCSC are impacted and in order to pursue either of these majors, students must have been admitted to UCSC as a proposed Computer Science Major. Students not admitted as proposed Computer Science will not be able to pursue either of these majors.

** Students who want to keep their proposed status as of their fourth quarter MUST pass Math 19A or 20A, and two additional Baskin Engineering courses from the following list within the first three quarters:

CHEM 3A or 4A – General Chemistry
CHEM 3B or 4B – General Chemistry
CSE 12 – Computer Systems & Assembly Language
ECE 13 – Computer Systems and C Programming
CSE 13S – Computer Systems and C Programming
CSE 16 – Applied Discrete Math
CSE 30 – Programming Abstractions: Python
TIM 50 – Business Information Systems
TIM 58 – Systems Analysis and Design
MATH 19B – Calculus
MATH 20B – Honors Calculus
PHYS 5A – Intro to Physics I
PHYS 5C – Intro to Physics III
