Declare Your Minor

For students who are already a declared in a major (Baskin Engineering or non-Baskin Engineering)

1. Print out the Petition for Major/Minor Declaration form.

2. Create a proposed course plan for your minor using the curriculum chart for your minor for the curriculum year that you are following. Please consult the general catalog for course pre-requisites and the engineering class schedule for when courses are offered.

   2a. Start with your academic plan with the courses that fulfill the remaining requirements for your  major. If you do not already have a major academic plan you will need to create one.

   2b. Add the classes to your plan that fulfill the requirements for the minor. While planning, please refer to the policy on “double counting” of program requirements to ensure that you meet minimum credit requirements for each program.

3. Write your proposed course plan on the back of your minor curriculum chart.

4. Meet with a Peer Advisor to go over your plan. Peer Advisors are generally available to assist with creating a plan during their Google Chat hours. 

5. Print out the Academic Planning Form and fill in your major and minor plan.

6. For non-Baskin Engineering majors: Take the completed Petition for Major/Minor Declaration and Academic Planning Form to your major advisor and have them sign both forms.

7. Bring your signed Petition for Major/Minor Declaration and Academic Planning Form, and a printout of your plan from your myUCSC portal to the Baskin Engineering Advising office during drop-in advising hours. At this point, you will meet with a staff advisor who will look over your forms and sign your Petition for Major/Minor Declaration and Academic Planning Form. If an Extension of Enrollment is required we will advise you on your next steps.

For students who are declaring a Baskin Engineering major and Baskin Engineering minor simultaneously

If you are declaring a Baskin Engineering major and minor simultaneously, please use the steps for declaring an Engineering major. When creating your academic plan make sure to include the courses that satisfy your major and minor requirements. Please also refer to the policy on “double counting” of program requirements.

For students who are declaring a Non-Baskin Engineering major and Baskin Engineering minor simultaneously

1. Print out the Petition for Major/Minor Declaration form.

2. Consult with your major department about declaring your major. Be sure to mention to them that you are also pursuing a minor. Complete the declaration of major process with your major department.

2a. Start with your academic plan with the courses that fulfill remaining requirements for your major.  If you do not already have a major academic plan you will need to create one.

2b. Add the classes to your plan that fulfill the requirements for the minor. While planning, please refer to the policy on “double counting” of program requirements to ensure that you meet minimum credit requirements for each program.

3. Create a proposed course plan for your minor using the curriculum chart for your minor for the curriculum year that you are following. Please consult the general catalog for course pre-requisites and the class schedule for when courses are offered

4. Write your proposed course plan on the back of your minor curriculum chart.

5. Meet with a Peer Advisor to go over your plan. View the Peer Advisor chat hours.

6. You will need an Academic Planning Form that includes both your major and minor requirements. In addition, a signature from your major advisor should be included on the academic planning form and ideally a notation regarding credit sharing between the major and minor programs.

7. Enter your proposed academic plan into “My Planner” in your myUCSC portal.

8. Bring your signed Petition for Major/Minor Declaration and Academic Planning Form, and a printout of your plan from your myUCSC portal to the Advising office during express advising hours. At this point, you will meet with a staff advisor who will look over your forms and sign your Petition for Major/Minor Declaration and Academic Planning Form. If an Extension of Enrollment or Committee Review is required we will advise you on your next steps.
